‘Een groter contrast tussen de rode lichten op de Oudezijds Achterburgwal en het culinaire walhalla dat erachter verborgen ligt, is ondenkbaar’. Het kleine steegje dat uitkomt bij dit restaurant roept zelfs Harry Potter associaties op. ‘De gastheer vertelt mooie verhalen over de wijnen’ en door de ‘spannende kaart’ wil je het liefst alle gerechten proeven. Het ’karakteristieke pand met oude muren’ zorgt voor een bijzondere ambiance. ‘Gastheerschap zoals het hoort’ in hartje Amsterdam. ‘Verwacht een wat chique avond als je hier reserveert’.

In the heart of the Red Light District is a small alley that leads to this charming oasis, complete with the innocent chirping of birds. "Blue on the Quay" is set in a courtyard that once belonged to the Bethanienklooster monastery; it now offers a restful ambience with multiple dining areas, each with a unique and serene view. Original wood floors and exposed-brick walls hint at the building's 1625 origins, but the extensive and inspired wine list, and the open kitchen employing fresh local ingredients in its Mediterranean-influenced cuisine, both have a contemporary chic. After starting with a frothy pea soup with chanterelle mushrooms and pancetta, you may want to indulge in a melt-in-the-mouth, herb-crusted lamb fillet.

Down an alley in the Red Light District lies this Mediterranean three-level restaurant. The clean-lined interior ensures that food, more than decor, receives the attention it's due. Attentive service, an accomplished kitchen, and an outdoor terrace appeal to those who stop in for the first time and are ready proof for regulars that Blauw aan de Wal is always ideal for a meal that's large on quiet, quality and charm. We visited Blauw aan de Wal for a second time for a birthday celebration having been previously very impressed. This visit was up to the same high standard. All the staff, from the moment we arrived, were superb welcoming, knowledgeable and attentive. The service is unhurried and the food excellent. I can honestly say that this is one of the best dining experiences I have ever had.
